Adding a “Mission Moment” to the Board Meeting Agenda

Published On: August 25, 2011

Learning from our members and sharing with other nonprofits is just one of many things I love about my job!  One of the best ideas I love to share is that of the “mission moment,” courtesy of Ronald McDonald House Charities of the Bluegrass.

I was a member of the RMHC board a few years ago and loved the incorporation of the “mission moment” into our board agendas.  For RMHC, the “mission moment” meant having a resident of the House, visitor to the RMHC Family Room at Kentucky Children’s Hospital or staff person share a story about how the organization was making a difference.  These were only five minutes of our meeting agenda, but that had a powerful impact!  They served as critical opportunities for board education; were excellent reminders that there were lives effected by our decisions; and these personal stories equipped us board members with information and testimony to share with the community as goodwill ambassadors and fundraisers.  Such a brief addition to the agenda served so many important functions.

Ongoing board education, orientation for all members and purposeful recruitment are three tools that can really strengthen your board.  Register today to join me during your lunch hour for a live webinar on Wednesday, August 31 to learn more about easy-to-implement ideas like the “mission moment.”  And don’t forget to invite your board members!
