Shh . . . here’s a secret!

I’m going to let you in on a big secret. . . my eight year old daughter is getting a dollhouse for Christmas.  This dollhouse was a gift I received from my grandmother when I was eight and I’m very excited to pass it along to her.  I hope she will absolutely love it – a gift she didn’t have on her “list” and isn’t expecting, but one that has special meaning for me and is one that I sincerely hope will allow us to create great memories together.

In the nonprofit community, we are also often blessed with unexpected gifts that have very special meaning.  Through Facebook, I’ve been following a great story from our member, Ronald McDonald House Charities of the Bluegrass.  This week, a fifth grade class from Madison County toured the Ronald McDonald House.  Before leaving, a little girl tapped Sarah Warner, their executive director, on the shoulder and shyly shared a crumpled dollar with her.  The little girl’s teacher later shared with Sarah that this child was one of the most needy in the school – a dollar is a big deal to most any child, but especially this little girl.  Sarah and the folks at RMHC were so moved, they sprang into action to make this an extra special holiday for this most generous child.  Sarah describes this simple gesture as the “best donation EVER.”

For me, this is what makes the holidays so magical – memories, generosity, love and unexpected gifts of all sizes.  While the dollhouse my daughter will receive on Christmas morning is not new, huge, pink and plastic like most “dream house” varieties and the donation received by Ronald McDonald House Charities of the Bluegrass wasn’t in the form of a $10,000 check – they both represent something much more important about giving and receiving.

At KNN, we are honored to serve as your state association and have been truly blessed to be both givers and receivers of many kinds of gifts.  I hope you will take time during this busy holiday season to reflect on the gifts your nonprofit has both received and given to your community this year.  And while I hope the RMHC story is one you will share with others, along with your own great stories of giving and receiving – please help me keep my secret!
