Threat to Nonprofits: Take Action to Protect Charitable Nonprofits in Tax Legislation

Thanks to effective advocacy, Senate leaders have made several changes to the tax reconciliation bill, and there is still work to do! The revised legislation still includes several harmful provisions that divert scarce resources away from nonprofits and our missions. Please continue to contact Kentucky’s two Senators and your Representative – urging them to protect charitable nonprofits and the people we serve in the tax legislation. We’ve provided you with an email and call template to make it easy to let them hear from you on two key remaining issues:

1.) Click links below for the contact forms for both of your Senators and your Congressman (3 emails total) and send the message below (feel free to add additional concerns of your own):

Topic: Select “Tax/Taxes”

Subject line: Protect the Work of KY Charitable Nonprofits in Tax Legislation

Paste in this message:

Dear [Senator McConnell, Senator Paul, Rep. X]

I am writing to express my deep concern that the tax legislation advancing in Congress will harm charitable nonprofit organizations in Kentucky and across the nation that are working to improve lives and strengthen communities. As the tax package moves forward, I urge you to remove harmful provisions that undermine the work of nonprofits and to instead bolster support for these vital institutions.

In particular, I urge you to:

  • OPPOSElimits on individual and corporate giving. These proposals (Section 70111, Section 70425, and Section 70426) discourage charitable donations made by individuals and corporations, ultimately leaving nonprofit organizations with fewer resources to serve their community.
  • SUPPORT and EXPANDtax incentives for charitable giving. Congress should include in the tax reconciliation package, The Charitable Act, introduced by Sen. Lankford (R-OK), Sen. Coons (D-DE), Rep. Moore (R-UT), and Rep. Pappas (D-NH) and co-sponsored by Kentucky delegation members Rep. Barr, Rep. Guthrie, and Rep. McGarvey to create a non-itemizer tax incentive for charitable donations to nonprofit organizations. See the one-page summary of The Charitable Act: https://bit.ly/4no0Ky3

Kentucky nonprofit organizations play a critical role in delivering needed services, driving economic growth, and strengthening communities. Whether by helping others in crisis through disaster recovery, food banks, shelters, addiction recovery programs, or crisis hotlines, or by bringing people together through the arts or humanities programs, nonprofits are deeply rooted in local communities, stepping in to fill gaps unmet by government.

Any tax legislation must protect charitable nonprofit organizations and the millions of people they serve.

Sincerely,

[Your Name]

[Your City & State]
