Kentucky Nonprofit Network proudly releases our third, updated Kentucky Nonprofit Compensation Report! The need for comparable salary and benefits information is a top request of KNN members, and we are delighted to offer this resource to help nonprofits: determine competitive salaries for each position in our organizations so we can recruit and retain skilled staff; understand how our organizations’ pay and compensation compares with others (by title, nonprofit type, budget size, and staff size); and access accurate data to support salary recommendations and equitable compensation practices within our organizations.
KNN’s 2026 More Than Charity report highlights the impact that charitable nonprofits have on Kentucky’s economy and communities. As the fourth-largest private-sector employer in the state, charitable nonprofits employ 178,864 Kentuckians, generate $11.9 billion in annual wages, and contribute $32.5 billion in expenditures benefiting Kentucky’s economy. Nearly one in ten private-sector jobs in Kentucky is at a charitable nonprofit employer. Check out the full report to learn more, and explore data by county and local workforce area on the More Than Charity Dashboard.
This checklist is designed to help nonprofits thoughtfully evaluate the risks and responsibilities that come with government funding opportunities. Before you apply—or after you’ve been awarded—use this tool to assess your organization’s capacity, understand the true costs, and ensure the terms support your mission rather than strain your resources.
This 4-page checklist is designed to help nonprofit 501(c)(3) organizations stay organized and up-to-date with essential annual filing requirements, regulatory obligations, and other key tasks critical to maintaining compliance and advancing organizational excellence.
In the wake of unprecedented federal funding cuts and uncertainty, KNN has published a comprehensive impact report illustrating the critical role nonprofit organizations play in communities across the Commonwealth — and the risks associated with limiting their ability to carry out their missions of serving you, your neighbors, and our communities.
These tools provide Kentucky-specific information on the legal requirements for operating a nonprofit organization, as well as information on recognized nonprofit management best practices.
The KY Nonprofit Voter Engagement Guide will help you learn how your organization can make a lasting impact on the future of our communities. The Guide includes information on nonpartisanship, where to find state and local election information, voter registration drive tips, tips on engaging candidates, and more.
KNN is committed to be a catalyst for transformation and a resource for nonprofit professionals and volunteers seeking to address racial equity and the impact it has on the work of nonprofits and those we serve. The goal of this work is to help organizations build on the core strengths of diversity, equity, and inclusion, making space for greater client trust and engagement; larger employee, board and volunteer pools; better collaboration and decision-making; and stronger results.

Our resources are designed to provide you with questions to consider before attempting to start a nonprofit, filings you’ll need to complete at the federal, state, and local levels, and the standard policies and procedures that a new nonprofit will want to have in place to maintain compliance with state and federal laws.
If you’ve formed a nonprofit, you’ll want to know the filings required to maintain your nonprofit corporation and federal tax-exempt status. This information serves as a general guide to what it takes to maintain compliance for your 501(c) nonprofit, although it may not be exhaustive or applicable to all nonprofits.
Annual charitable solicitation registration required for most nonprofits. Visit our resource page to learn more about registration with the Kentucky Office of the Attorney General (and other states, if required).
